Things I'm no longer doing in my 50's

I just can't.

Somewhere between turning 50 and realizing I have absolutely no interest in pretending anymore, something changed.

Maybe it was menopause. Maybe it was wisdom. Maybe it was 50 years of putting up with everybody else's nonsense finally reaching its expiration date. Whatever it was, I'm no longer doing a lot of things I used to do. And honestly? I highly recommend it.

I'm not talking about quitting my job, moving to a beach, and changing my name to something exotic. I'm talking about the little things we've spent decades doing because we thought we should.

I'm No Longer Saying Yes When I Mean No

This one has been a work in progress. For years, I'd say yes because I didn't want to disappoint someone.

Yes, I'll help.

Yes, I'll do that.

Yes, I can squeeze that into my already ridiculous schedule.

Yes, I'll bring the casserole.

Yes, I'll volunteer.

Yes, I'll fix your website.

Yes, I'll listen to your 47-minute story about someone I have never met.

No. Just no. These days, I'm learning that "no" is a complete sentence. And apparently it doesn't require a 17-paragraph explanation and an apology. Who knew?

I'm No Longer Trying to Make Everyone Like Me

Listen, I would LOVE for everyone to like me. But if someone doesn't? I think I'll survive. I'm not going to spend three days wondering whether someone misunderstood my Facebook post, my facial expression, my tone, or the fact that I didn't respond to a text message within six minutes. At some point you have to realize that you're not everyone's cup of tea.

And that's okay. Some people don't like coffee either. They're clearly wrong, but we allow them to live their lives.

I'm No Longer Wearing Uncomfortable Clothes Just Because They're "Cute"

If my shoes hurt, they're coming off. If my pants don't have some stretch in them, they can go directly into the donation pile. If I can't breathe, sit down, bend over, or eat dinner in it, I'm not wearing it. I have reached the age where comfort is not a bonus feature.

Comfort is the entire assignment. And if something is cute and comfortable? Well, congratulations. You have won the lottery.

I'm No Longer Apologizing for Resting

I used to feel guilty sitting down. There was always something that needed to be cleaned, organized, answered, cooked, washed, folded, scheduled or generally dealt with. Now? Sometimes I sit on the porch. Sometimes I read. Sometimes I watch television. Sometimes I stare into space and think about absolutely nothing. And I don't feel guilty about it. Rest isn't laziness. Sometimes your body is basically standing there holding a tiny sign that says: MA'AM. SIT DOWN.

I've decided to listen.

I'm No Longer Keeping a Perfect House

My house is lived in. There are dishes. There is laundry. There are probably things sitting somewhere that I have no idea where they came from. And you know what? Nobody is coming over with a white glove. If you come to my house and judge me because there are dishes in the sink, I'm going to assume you brought the dishwasher tabs and get back to my book.

I'm No Longer Explaining Myself to Everyone

This one is freeing. I don't need everyone to understand every decision I make. I don't need to convince people that I'm doing the right thing. I don't need to provide a detailed PowerPoint presentation explaining why I said no. Sometimes the answer is simply:

Because I don't want to. And at 50-something, that's actually a pretty good reason.

I'm No Longer Chasing Every Trend

I don't need every new gadget. I don't need every viral beauty product. I don't need to dress like I'm 25. I don't need to know every TikTok dance. And if another person tells me I need a 17-step skincare routine, I'm going to need a nap. I'm figuring out what actually works for me.

That feels a whole lot better than constantly trying to keep up.

I'm No Longer Feeling Guilty About Taking Care of Myself

For years, women are often expected to take care of everybody else first.

Kids.

Spouses.

Parents.

Jobs.

Homes.

Pets.

Everybody.

And then somewhere at the bottom of the list is us. I'm moving myself up the list. Not because I don't love the people in my life.

I do. But because I live here too. My life matters too. My health matters. My happiness matters. My time matters. And I don't think that's selfish. I think it's overdue.

I'm No Longer Giving My Energy Away for Free

This might be my favorite one. My energy is valuable. My time is valuable. My peace is valuable. And I'm becoming a lot more selective about where I spend all three. Drama? No thanks. Constant negativity? Pass. People who only call when they need something? Hard pass.

Arguments on the internet? Absolutely not. I've got laundry to ignore.

I'm No Longer Trying to Be the Woman Everyone Expects Me to Be

Maybe that's the biggest change of all. I'm figuring out who I am now. Not who I was at 25. Not who I thought I was supposed to be at 35.

Not who somebody else thinks I should be at 50. Me. The woman who has lived enough life to know that not everything deserves her energy. The woman who has learned some things the hard way. The woman who has made mistakes and survived them.

The woman who can still laugh at herself. And the woman who has finally realized that getting older isn't the worst thing in the world.

Actually, it might come with a pretty fantastic perk:

You finally stop giving so many damn fucks.

And I'm here for it.

What Are You No Longer Doing?

I'd love to know.

What's something you stopped doing in your 40s or 50s?

Are you done with people-pleasing?

Done wearing uncomfortable shoes?

Done cleaning before people come over?

Done explaining yourself?

Done caring what everyone thinks?

Tell me in the comments.

Because apparently one of the best things about getting older is realizing we're all sitting here thinking:

"Wait...we don't HAVE to do that anymore?"

Nope.

We really don't.

And that's the beauty of getting older.
